Oracle Installation files extraction with cpio

For a Unix or Linux installation, Oracle places its installation files in cpio (archiving format) to contain multiple directory structures in a single file. This article describes the use of the cpio utility to extract Oracle installation files.

1. Download your oracle installation files from www.oracle.com

2. Logon to your Oracle database server and place the installation files in the appropriate location.

3. Extract the cpio.gz installation software with the following command.

gunzip (name_of_cpio_file .cpio.gz)

4. Unpack the archive file using the cpio utility with options –idmv

cpio -idmv < (name_of_cpio_file.cpio)

NOTE: replace the string (name_of_cpio_file .cpio) with your actual cpio file name, but do not remove the first < - greater than sign, that is the input of your file name into the utility. 5. Oracle – Adding DBA user to password file:

Oracle provides for a normal DBA user account to remotely connect to a database with SYSDBA privileges through the use of a password file. This article will cover granting a normal DBA user the SYSDBA privilege which in turn adds the user to the password file for that database.
This allows the user to connect remotely to the database for the purpose of shutting down the database and starting the database.
This procedure will work on any OS.

1. From a remote machine, not your Oracle database server, attempt to connect as SYSDBA to your database with an account which has DBA privileges.

2. The reason this fails with insufficient privileges at first, is because the user LJCATT is not recorded in the database password file for remote access with SYSDBA privilege. The following steps outline how to add the user LJCATT to the remote access password file.

5. Verify that you are using a password file by ensuring that the init parameter REMOTE_LOGIN_PASSWORDFILE is set to exclusive or shared.

6. If the REMOTE_LOGIN_PASSWORDFILE init parameter is set to NONE, adjust it to EXCLUSIVE or SHARED.

7. In SQLPLUS, grant the privilege SYSDBA to LJCATT.

Grant succeeded.

8. Now, the user LJCATT has been added to the password file. From a remote machine, not your Oracle database server, attempt to connect to your database with the account LJCATT with SYSDBA.

Oracle RMAN recovery of files on a lost mount point

Oracle’s Recovery Manger (RMAN), originally released in Oracle 8, is a proprietary utility used for the backup and recovery of Oracle databases. Given a good Oracle RMAN backup, A DBA can recover from any disaster which may occur to their database, to include: loss of controlfiles, loss of datafiles, corruption of datafiles, loss of the entire database and even provides the ability to clone a database. In this article we give detailed instructions on the recovery of a lost mount point in Oracle 9i, however these instructions will work in versions 10g and 11g.

1. Logon to the Oracle server as the Oracle software owner and set the ORACLE_SID.

2. Logon to SQL*PLUS and obtain the location of all datafiles from the table dba_data_files. Note: There exist two data files on /u05 that can be used for this test.

3. Exit SQL*PLUS and navigate to /u05/oradata/ORCL, create temp directory and move all files located on the mount point /u05 to the new directory. This will simulate the loss of all Oracle related files on /u05. In a real situation, you would have your SA recreate the /u05 mount point.

4. Log back into SQL*PLUS and attempt to shutdown the database. You will receive an indicating that the files on mount point /u05 cannot be located.

In this article we give detailed instructions on the recovery of a lost or corrupted tablespace datafile in Oracle 9i, however these instructions will work in versions 10g and 11g.

1. Logon to the oracle server as the oracle software owner.

2. Set the ORACLE_SID and logon to sqlplus as sysdba.

3. Query the dba_data_files table for tablespaces and datafiles. We are looking for a datafile which can be moved out of the location specified in the controlfile, resulting in tablespace corruption

4. Shutdown the database with immediate.

5. Exit SQL*PLUS and move to directory /u05/oradata/ORCL. Create a temp directory and move the datafile users01.dbf into the new temp directory.

temp02.dbf tools01.dbf users01.dbf
[oracle@testdb02 ORCL]$

6. Log back into sqlplus and startup your Oracle instance. Note: the error received referring to datafile users01.dbf, there exists a reference to this datafile in the controlfile, however Oracle could not locate the file. This results in the tablespace USERS being in an unusable inconsistent state.

7. To resolve the inconsistence, we must startup the RMAN utility and connect to both the target database and recovery catalog.

8. From within the RMAN utility, issue the command to ‘restore tablespace ’. In this example the tablespace was USERS. The restore command replaces the tablespace’s datafiles in your database with the copy in your backup set.

9. From within the RMAN utility, issue the command ‘recover tablespace ’. The recover command applies all archive redo logs which have occurred since the last backup set.

Oracle provides the procedure UTL_FILE to allow for the reading of external OS layer files from within the Oracle RDBMS. This article will give an example of how to read the contents of an external OS file and display it in the Oracle database.

1. Logon to your Oracle database server as the Oracle software owner.

2. Create a file called read.txt with the following text.

This is line one.

3. Logon to SQL*PLUS with an account which has DBA privileges. In this example we are using the account LJCATT.

Creating an external file from within the Oracle RDBMS.

Oracle provides the package UTL_FILE to produce OS layer files from within the Oracle RDBMS. This article will show a basic procedure for the producing an OS layer file from within the Oracle RDBMS.

1. Logon to your Oracle database server as the Oracle software owner.

2. Create a file called create_file.sql with the following SQL.

4. Ensure that the system initialization parameter for utl_file_dir contains the directory to which utl_file is going to write with the command show utl_file_dir.

5. If it does not contain the directory, as is the case in step 4, logon to your Oracle database as sysdba and add the directory structure and bounce the database, as seen below:
